Emerald Breakfast Frappe

Here’s a yummy smoothie-like frappe to help your body cleanse and detox. You’ve all heard “eat your leafy greens,” but how much broccoli can you eat in a day? This enlivening blend makes it easy to get your greens. Chlorophyll-dense foods enrich your blood, purify toxins, counter inflammation and aid your renewal on a cellular level.  For a truly refreshing way to start your day… go green!

If you wish, double the recipe and carry a portion to work in a to-go cup for your mid-morning break. This frappe is a healthy addiction.

Yields 2 cups

2 cups Romaine lettuce or spinach, chopped
1 cup basil or parsley with stems, chopped
1 mango, chopped
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Loosely pack Romaine, basil, mango and cinnamon in a blender. Add water to 1/2 inch below the ingredient level. Blend until smooth, scraping down the blender’s sides as necessary. Scrape into a bowl and serve with a spoon.

Variations:

Smoothie: Add enough additional water to make a beverage.

Other greens: Freely add or substitute arugula, basil, bok choy, celery, celery with leaves, chard, Chinese cabbage, cilantro, collards, dill or kale.  (Avoid the more gaseous forming greens such as cabbage and broccoli.)

Other fruits: Freely substitute fresh apples, apricots, Asian pears, banana, berries, pitted cherries, grapes, melon, nectarines, papaya, peaches, pears or plums.

Dried fruit:  Substitute dried fruits for the fresh, such as apples, pitted prunes or raisins. Soak dried fruit until well plumped, for 2 hours or overnight. Add both the rehydrated fruits and their soaking water.

Savory Frappe: In place of a fruit, substitute bell pepper, chili peppers, cucumber, tomato or shredded beets or carrots.

Enriched Frappe: Add an avocado or shredded unsweetened coconut. Or use soaked pumpkin or sunflower seeds (soak the seeds for 4 hours or overnight, strain out and discard the soaking water).

Smooth Moving Frappe: To add laxative properties, include ground flax seeds and/or dried and rehydrated figs or pitted prunes.
