Rebecca,
I recently purchased your Whole Foods encyclopedia and am really enjoying it.
I read with much interest your descriptions of making homemade root beer. On my in-laws property, we have discovered sarsparilla roots in the past. We dug some up and attempted to make a syrup with it that we could mix with sparkling water for our own version of "root beer". It was not a very successful endeavor. We would love to try again, and now we even have beer making supplies to try a more authentic version. Do you have a recipe and instructions on how to do it?
Thank you.

Re: homemade root beer?
Thank you!
Today, my favorite way of making root beer is with a kefir starter. See http://rwood.com/Articles/Kefir.htm Several of the suppliers I mention in that article have wonderful root beer recipes and starters.
It's a great beverage. Enjoy.
