how to find practitioner

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to ask this but I'm going to try.
I just moved to a new (big!) city and am soooo overwhelmed by so many choices. I need to find a wholistic practitioner for my family. I searched on the internet and came up with no less than 100 in my immediate area.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to pick one? How do you know who is "real" and knows their stuff?
