Fish Quality

Whether you enjoy fish frequently or occasionally, please be informed about its quality. Sea Food Watch makes this easy. These web pages, sponsored by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, clearly describe which fish are safe for consumption and which are not.  It also has a printable pocketsize guide for reference when shopping and eating out.

For example, troll/pole-caught albacore tuna are safe to eat as these fishing methods catch younger tuna with lower mercury levels. Longline-caught albacore tuna, however, contain elevated levels of mercury.

Mercury is an especially critical concern if you pregnant, breast-feeding, considering becoming pregnant, elderly or if you are serving infants and young children; in which case, both the FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency advise against eating fish with the highest levels of mercury.
