Healing with Food Update
Seaweed
Accompanying recipe: Sautéed Dulse
I ’m just back from the Oregon coast with my family and friends. It was a lovely vacation…good food, camaraderie, beach time and, of course, seaweed harvesting.
At low tide and in no time at all we collected several buckets of nori and sea whip. The children helped me hang the whip on the line to dry and I crisped the nori in the oven then pulverized it in my blender. Now we’ve a good stash of these two valuable veggies with plenty extra for sharing.
Recall that along with gold and jewels, essential food ingredients, like salt and seaweed, were also historical trade items. Years ago when I shopped in open air Indian markets in mountainous and land-locked Bolivia I recall finding several varieties of seaweed--including some I'd never used before. Historically, both costal and inland peoples throughout the world enhanced their health and eating pleasure with vegetables from the sea.
Mineral-dense seaweed is the ultimate super food. It is medicinal for whatever ails you, from cancer to obesity, and is delicious in its own right (see Sautéed Dulse) or as an added ingredient.
The medicinal and energetic properties of each variety are listed in my New Whole Foods Encyclopedia.
May you be well nourished!
